2026 Nissan Pathfinder: Comfortable, Spacious... Maybe Too Spacious!

The 2026 Nissan Pathfinder is a large family SUV capable of carrying plenty of people, plenty of luggage, and, when needed, even a trailer. With its 3.5-litre V6, intelligent all-wheel drive, three rows of seats, and towing capacity of up to 6,000 lb, it is clearly aimed at drivers who have real needs for space and versatility. During my test drive, I tried to see it for what it really is: a large family SUV, not a compact urban vehicle or a model designed for agility. That is exactly where the Pathfinder becomes interesting, because it impresses in some situations... but also shows its limits fairly quickly in others.

Impressive comfort, big-SUV driving feel

The first thing that stood out to me was the comfort. The Pathfinder is extremely comfortable. The driving position is pleasant, the cabin is spacious, and the whole vehicle gives a solid impression. On the highway or during longer trips, it quickly becomes clear why this type of vehicle appeals to so many families. The driving experience is also very much what you would expect from the category. The all-wheel drive inspires confidence, especially when the road surface is damaged or conditions become less ideal. The vehicle feels stable and holds the road well. However, it remains heavy and not especially agile. This is not an SUV you choose for its dynamic feel. You feel confident, yes, but you never forget that you are driving a big vehicle.

In the city, that reality becomes even more obvious. For someone like me who lives in an urban environment, the Pathfinder is simply too imposing for everyday use. Parking spots, narrow streets, and tight manoeuvres require more attention. Fortunately, technologies like the 360-degree camera make things much easier, even if they obviously do not make the vehicle any smaller.

Plenty of space, if you actually need it

Inside, the Pathfinder is well equipped and gives the impression of a luxury family vehicle. The third row is there, but it remains small. In my opinion, most owners will mainly benefit from the huge rear cargo area when that row is not in use. That is where the Pathfinder really starts to make sense: luggage, sports equipment, road trips, cottage weekends, trailers...

Towing capacity is also a major argument. With up to 6,000 lb, the Pathfinder can genuinely do more than just take the kids to school. But you still have to need that capability. The same goes for the price. In the category, it is fairly average, but at more than $60,000 for the version I tested, the purchase has to be justified. Fuel consumption disappointed me, however. Nissan announces 11.8 L/100 km in the city and 9.6 L/100 km on the highway for the Platinum version. In my case, I slightly exceeded those figures, which is noticeable with today’s fuel prices.

In the end, the 2026 Nissan Pathfinder is comfortable, reassuring, spacious, and very capable. It does exactly what a large family SUV is supposed to do. However, you really need to make use of all that space, towing capacity, and size. For a family that travels a lot or regularly carries a lot of gear, it can be very relevant. For mostly urban use, it may simply be much bigger than necessary.
