The Moon Will Have Goodyear Tires!

You might think of a tire as something deeply earthly. After all, we usually associate tires less with craters and more with asphalt, potholes, wet roads, gravel paths, or parking lots. And yet, Goodyear has just reminded us of something pretty spectacular: even on the Moon, tires still matter!

That’s right: the famous manufacturer will supply advanced lunar tires for Lunar Outpost’s Pegasus Lunar Terrain Vehicle, as part of the Artemis program. This vehicle is expected to support astronaut missions starting in 2028. In other words, this is not just some futuristic concept sitting in an auto show. We are talking about a real vehicle, designed to help astronauts go farther, work longer, and explore an environment where even the smallest failure can become a serious problem.

Goodyear’s Lunar Tires Will Roll Where Nothing Is Normal

On Earth, a tire already has to deal with a lot. Think of the vehicle’s weight, speed, heat, water, wear, impacts, and friction. On the Moon, all of that becomes even more extreme. The tires will have to roll over a rocky, uneven surface covered in extremely abrasive dust. They will also have to withstand huge temperature swings and operate in gravity much weaker than Earth’s.

That is where you realize that a tire is much more than just a piece of rubber. It is an engineered component that has to maintain contact with the ground, support the vehicle’s load, and resist wear. On the Moon, as you can imagine, you can’t exactly call a tow truck or stop by the nearest garage…

What the Moon Reminds Us

Obviously, our everyday tires do not face the same conditions as lunar tires… and that’s probably a good thing! Still, the basic idea remains the same. Whether we are talking about an SUV on the highway, an electric car in the city, or a lunar vehicle in space, everything starts with contact with the ground.

That is also what makes this news so interesting to me. It shows that grip, resistance, and mobility are universal concerns, literally. On Earth, a good tire can improve comfort, safety, fuel efficiency, and confidence behind the wheel. On the Moon, it can actually help a mission move forward!

In the end, Goodyear’s lunar tires remind us of something simple: no matter the planet, moving forward always starts with what touches the surface.
