The Importance of Winter Tires

Winter tire season is back and if you live in Quebec, they are even mandatory from December 1 to March 15 inclusively. But aside from the fact that they offer more bite and increased protection against winter hazards, their very composition makes winter tires the best option for driving during the cold season, and here is why.

First, it’s important to know that the composition of a winter tire differs from that of a summer tire or even an all-season tire. Indeed, since the latter 2 are designed to be used when the weather is warm, they are perfectly adapted to the temperatures that prevail during the summer months. However, they lose their effectiveness when the temperature drops below 7 degrees because their rubber will harden under the effect of the cold.

On the other hand, the composition of winter tires of all brands ensures that they remain more flexible when the mercury drops down, and the rubber mix used makes them highly efficient even when weather conditions deteriorate. However, when the warm spring days return, this compound will wear out faster in the heat, so winter tires are not recommended for use in the middle of summer.

Better performance in icy and snowy conditions

In addition to its special composition, a winter tire has two to three times the number of sipes than a conventional all-season tire; the sipes are also deeper and wider. Why is that so? Simply to be able to evacuate water, snow and slush more efficiently and thus considerably reduce the risk of hydroplaning.

Although most recent vehicles are equipped with various safety and driving assistance systems, these cannot be fully effective if your car is fitted with the wrong tires. In fact, a pre-collision system with emergency braking will be useless if your tires are not adapted to the season! That is why winter tires are essential for driving in the safest possible conditions, even when conditions deteriorate.

Please note that the tread thickness of your winter tires must be 6/32nds of an inch or more to ensure safe driving.
