Why you should remove your winter tires for the spring season
We very often get this question at blackcircles.ca: “My Winter tires are brand new, why should I change them for the Spring/Summer?”
In short you should absolutely not drive on your winter tires during the Summer season. Winter tires are manufactured with a special compound made mostly with natural rubber (as opposed to synthetic) that can remain soft at lower temperatures maintaining a good grip.
You can imagine what happens to these tires made to remain soft by -30°C when you use them on a +30°C road:
- Premature wear
- Significant fuel consumption increase
- Lower grip and cornering performance
- Increase in braking distance
When temperatures are high, winter tires can become dangerous as their perforamnce is significantly reduced leading to increased braking distances.
Manufacturers generally use the 7 degree rule for tire changes because this is the temperature at which the chemical properties of the tread compound begin to change. Once the temperature stabilizes above 10 degrees Celsius you should remove your winter tires.
